Section 1 Introduction to Paralives Controls

Mastering keyboard shortcuts and controls in Paralives is the single most impactful skill you can develop as a player. Whether you're building intricate custom houses, managing your Para folk's daily life, or crafting the perfect character in Paramaker, knowing the right key combinations can reduce your task time by 50% or more.

This comprehensive guide covers every shortcut in Paralives across all game modes — from basic global commands to advanced builder-specific sequences. Bookmark this page or print the Quick Reference Card at the end for easy access during gameplay.

Note: This guide is based on Paralives Early Access version (May 2026 release). Some shortcuts may be updated in future patches. Always check the in-game Settings > Controls menu for the most current bindings.

Why Keyboard Shortcuts Matter in Paralives

How to Customize Your Shortcuts

Paralives offers extensive control remapping options. To customize your keyboard shortcuts:

  1. Open the main menu by pressing Esc or clicking the three-dot icon in the top-right corner.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Controls / Keybindings.
  3. Browse categories: Global, Build Mode, Live Mode, Camera, Paramaker.
  4. Click any binding and press your desired new key combination.
  5. Conflicts are automatically detected and highlighted in red.
  6. Export/Import your custom profile using the buttons at the bottom of the panel.

Pro Tip: Create multiple control profiles for different activities — one optimized for building, one for storytelling/cinematics, and one for general gameplay. Switch between them instantly via the profile dropdown in settings.

Drag Operations

Mouse Gestures (Advanced)

Paralives supports optional mouse gesture recognition for power users. Enable these in Settings > Controls > Mouse Gestures:

Note: Mouse gestures are off by default because they can interfere with normal right-click-drag camera rotation. Enable them only if you primarily use middle-mouse-button for camera panning and want gesture-based shortcuts for frequent actions like rotating objects.

Section 8 Gamepad / Controller Mapping

Paralives offers full controller support for Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. While keyboard and mouse offer the highest precision for building, controllers provide a relaxed couch-gaming experience and are perfectly viable for Live Mode playthroughs.

Section 9 Advanced Control Tips

Beyond memorizing individual shortcuts, true mastery comes from understanding how to combine them into efficient workflows. This section covers professional techniques, recommended custom profiles, and power-user strategies.

Efficiency Boosting Techniques

  1. Learn the "Non-Dominant Hand Split": Keep your dominant hand on the mouse for precise clicking/dragging, while your non-dominant hand rests on the keyboard's core shortcut cluster (QWER, ASDF). This parallel processing approach doubles your effective actions per minute.
  2. Use Modifier Chaining: Instead of releasing modifiers between actions, chain them. Example: Hold ShiftClick (add to selection) → Click (add another) → Click (add another) → release. This is far faster than pressing Shift+Click three separate times.
  3. Memorize Muscle-Memory Clusters: Group related shortcuts spatially so your fingers learn positions:
    • Build Cluster (left hand): W(wall) F(floor) D(delete) S(select) A(adjust)
    • Object Cluster (right hand): R(rotate) E(grab) Q(copy) G(grid) H(hide)
    • Camera Cluster: WASD+QE for free cam, MMB for pan, scroll for zoom
  4. Create Keyboard Macros (if allowed): For repetitive tasks like placing rows of identical objects, consider macro software (AutoHotkey, Razer Synapse) to automate sequences. Always verify this complies with Paralives' terms of service for any online features.
  5. Use NumPad for Camera Presets: If you have a full keyboard, the numpad gives instant access to 10+ camera angles. This alone can cut screenshot setup time by 70%.
  6. Develop "Shortcut Reflexes" for Emergencies: Train yourself to instinctively hit Space (pause) when something unexpected happens, F5 (save) after major accomplishments, and Ctrl+Z (undo) the moment something looks wrong.

Common Operation Sequences (Combo Chains)

Combo Chain 1: Rapid Room Furnishing

Sequence: B (open catalog) → Click item → Ctrl+V (paste repeatedly) →
Arrow keys (position each) → [ ] (adjust heights) → R (rotate as needed)
Time savings: ~60% vs. click-and-drag method
Best for: Placing identical items (chairs, plants, decorations)

Combo Chain 2: Precision Wall Construction

Sequence: W (wall tool) → G (ensure grid on) → Click+drag walls →
         Shift+W (switch curved) → Add arch → F (floor tool) → Fill room →
         B (catalog) → Door/window → Place at wall gaps
Time savings: ~45% vs. menu-navigation approach
Best for: Building complete rooms from scratch

Combo Chain 3: Cinematic Screenshot Setup

Sequence: F4 (photo mode) → Tab (hide UI) → Ctrl+Click object (focus) →
         ; (enable DOF) → ' (adjust aperture) → ] (cycle filter) →
NumPad+ (widen FOV) → Enter (capture)
Time savings: ~75% vs. manual menu navigation
Best for: Publication-quality screenshots and thumbnails

Combo Chain 4: Household Morning Routine

Sequence: 1 (select Para 1) → Shift+Click fridge → Choose breakfast →
         2 (select Para 2) → Shift+Click shower → Queue shower →
Space (pause) → Review queues → Space (unpause)
Time savings: ~40% vs. sequential menu clicking
Best for: Managing multi-Para households efficiently

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can I use a controller and keyboard at the same time?

A: Yes! Paralives supports simultaneous input from multiple devices. You can use the controller for camera movement and the keyboard for shortcuts simultaneously. The game intelligently prioritizes the most recently used device for each input type. However, some actions may conflict if both devices send conflicting commands at the exact same moment.

Q2: How do I fix shortcuts that aren't working?

A: If shortcuts stop responding, try these steps in order: (1) Check if another application has captured the key combination (especially screenshot tools, overlay apps like Discord/Steam, or macro software). (2) Go to Settings > Controls and verify the binding hasn't been changed or unbound. (3) Reset controls to defaults using the button at the bottom of the Controls panel. (4) Restart Paralives — some binding changes require a restart to take effect. (5) If using a non-US keyboard layout, certain symbols may map differently; try switching to US layout temporarily.

Q3: What's the difference between Undo (Ctrl+Z) and the in-mode Undo (U)?

A: Ctrl+Z is the global undo that works everywhere but may have limited history depth (typically 10-20 steps). The mode-specific U key (in Build Mode) maintains a much deeper undo stack specifically for build actions (up to 200 steps) and can undo complex multi-object operations that the global undo might treat as a single action. For serious building, always prefer the mode-specific undo.

Q4: Why does my game lag when I use too many shortcuts rapidly?

A: Rapid-fire shortcut input (especially object placement with Ctrl+V paste spamming) can create many game objects in quick succession. Each placed object requires physics calculation, rendering preparation, and save-state tracking. If you experience slowdown, try: reducing paste frequency, lowering graphics settings, or enabling "Batch Processing" in Build Mode settings which groups rapid placements into single update cycles.

Q5: Are there shortcuts exclusive to specific keyboard layouts?

A: Most shortcuts work regardless of keyboard layout since Paralives uses scancode-based input (physical key position) rather than character-based input. However, symbol-dependent shortcuts that reference specific characters (like [, ], ;) may shift position on non-QWERTY layouts. Paralives automatically detects your OS keyboard layout and displays the correct key labels in the in-game controls menu. AZERTY and QWERTZ layouts are fully supported.

Q6: Does Paralives support touch controls on tablets or Steam Deck?

A: Paralives has experimental touch support optimized for Steam Deck and Windows tablets. Touch controls emulate a virtual controller overlay — tap to select, swipe to pan/rotate, pinch to zoom. While functional, touch controls lack the precision of mouse/keyboard for Build Mode. For Steam Deck specifically, the native controller mapping works excellently for Live Mode and casual building. Official touchscreen optimization is planned for a future update.

Q7: Can I export/import my custom keybindings to share with friends?

A: Absolutely! Go to Settings > Controls > Manage Profiles. You'll find Export and Import buttons that save/load keybinding configurations as .parabind files. These are plain-text JSON files that you can easily share via Discord, forums, or mod sites. The community maintains several popular binding profiles you can download — search "Paralives keybinding profiles" on the official forums or Reddit.

Q8: Which 10 shortcuts should I learn first as a beginner?

A: Here's the priority order for new players:
1. F5 (Quick Save) — Never lose progress
2. Space (Pause) — Stop time when overwhelmed
3. Esc (Cancel/Menu) — Universal back button
4. F6/F7/F8 (Time Speed) — Control simulation pacing
5. R (Rotate) — Most-used build action
6. G (Grid Toggle) — Essential for precise placement
7. Ctrl+Z (Undo) — Mistake recovery
8. Tab (Hide UI) — Clean screenshots
9. F4 (Photo Mode) — Beautiful captures
10. 1-9 (Quick Select Para) — Household switching
Master these ten and you're already ahead of 80% of players.
