How the Career System Works
Paralives replaces the traditional career ladder with a flexible, skill-based Application Points system. Instead of simply showing up to work and waiting for a promotion clock to tick down, your career success depends on your Parafolk's actual skills, mood, relationships, and daily performance.
The system rewards intentional gameplay: building the right skills, maintaining good relationships with colleagues, keeping your Parafolk happy, and making strategic choices about work schedules and job perks.

Finding & Applying for Jobs
There are multiple ways to find employment in Paralives:
- Phone: Use your Parafolk's phone to browse available job listings. Shows all positions that match your current qualifications.
- Computer: Search for jobs online. Same listings as the phone, just a different interface.
- Job Posters: "Now Hiring" signs appear on community lots throughout Melino. Clicking them lets you apply directly at that location — feels more grounded than menu-hopping.
- Newspaper: A physical newspaper available at some locations. Contains job listings alongside other news.
- Word of Mouth: Some jobs become available through NPC conversations and relationship connections.
Application Strategy: Don't just apply to the first job you see. Hover over listings to see your current Application Points total and which skills need improvement. A few days of skill-building before applying can make the difference between getting hired and rejection.
The Application Points System
Each job posting shows the Application Points required and how your Parafolk's current qualifications stack up. Points are accumulated from:
- Relevant Skills: The primary way to earn application points. Jobs list which skills they value most.
- Knowledge Categories: General knowledge areas (Science, Technology, Art, etc.) that some jobs prioritize.
- Personality Traits: Some jobs prefer specific Vibes or personality characteristics.
- Existing Relationships: Knowing someone at the workplace can boost your application.
- Life Stage: Some positions require minimum age (Young Adult, Adult, or Elder).
When you apply, the game compares your points to the job's requirements. Meeting or exceeding the threshold gets you hired. Some positions have competitive acceptance where only the top applicants get offers.

Flexible Work Schedules
One of Paralives' most praised career features is the fully customizable work schedule. Unlike traditional life sims that force you into rigid 9-to-5 blocks:
- Choose specific work days: No more being forced to work weekends. Set Mon-Fri, or any combination that suits your lifestyle.
- Set custom shift times: Morning shifts, afternoon shifts, evening shifts — pick what fits your Para's sleep cycle and social life.
- Adjust as career progresses: Promotions may come with different schedule flexibility.
- Perfect for family Parafolks: Parents can work school hours only, leaving afternoons for children.
Schedule Tip: If you want to maintain hobbies, relationships, and a career simultaneously, a 4-day work week with longer shifts often provides the best balance. Your Para loses less time commuting and gains more free days.
Upgrade Points & Promotions
Paralives uses a unique Upgrade Points system for career advancement:
- Attend work regularly (arrive on time, meet daily goals, stay focused)
- Earn Upgrade Points at the end of each workday
- Spend Upgrade Points in the career menu to level up
- When you level up, you receive 3 cards:
- 1 Career Advancement Card: Permanently raises your job rank
- 2 Job Perk Cards: Choose 1 to add to your 3-slot perk bar
This system gives you meaningful choices at every promotion. The two perk cards let you customize your career path — choose perks that match your playstyle rather than being locked into a single progression.
Job Perks System
Each career has unique perk cards that unlock at various ranks. Examples include:
- Performance Bonus: Earn extra Paradimes on high-performance days
- Work From Home: Some shifts can be done remotely
- Skill Practice at Work: Level skills while working
- Coworker Influence: Stronger bonuses from positive coworker relationships
- Stress Resistance: Reduce negative mood effects from difficult workdays
- Flexible Hours: Unlock more schedule customization options
Perk Strategy
The 3-slot perk bar forces meaningful trade-offs. Stack bonuses in one area (max income) or diversify for a more balanced career experience. Experiment with different perk combinations at each promotion.
Career Building Tips
- Build relevant skills before applying. Check the job requirements, then spend a few in-game days practicing those skills at home. A skill check that seems daunting becomes easy with minimal practice.
- Maintain positive mood at work. A happy Parafolk performs better. Satisfy needs before heading to work, and avoid scheduling work when exhaustion or hunger is critical.
- Cultivate coworker relationships. Positive relationships with colleagues and managers directly boost your daily performance evaluation. Consider befriending your boss.
- Customize your schedule from day one. Don't accept the default schedule. Set work hours that leave time for skills, relationships, and personal projects.
- Choose perks deliberately. At each promotion, think about your long-term goals. A perk that boosts income is good; one that enables skill practice while working is better for long-term progression.
- Consider a second job later. Once established in one career, some Parafolks can take a second part-time job in a different field for extra income and skill variety.
- Use Town Events for networking. Some careers have coworkers who attend specific Town Events. Building relationships there can lead to workplace opportunities.
