Life Stage System Overview

Paralives features 8 distinct life stages that every Parafolk progresses through during their lifetime. Each stage brings unique mechanics, gameplay opportunities, and developmental milestones. Understanding each stage helps you plan the perfect life journey for your Parafolks.

Life stages are displayed as progress bars rather than specific ages. Each life stage has its own progress bar, and the further along the bar, the older the Parafolk is within that stage. However, the exact age in days is not shown to the player.

Life Stage Quick Reference

8 total stages · 3 have growth spurts (Child, Preteen, Teen) · 8 use personality points · 3 life stages unlock Talents (Child onwards) · No afterlife exists in Paralives · Aging can be toggled off

All 8 Life Stages

👶

Baby

Age range: 0–1 | Duration: Variable (in-game days)

Babies are the earliest life stage and require constant care. They cannot perform actions independently — another household member must feed, change, and tend to them. Babies have no height sliders in the Paramaker, so their appearance is simplified. They develop Language skills through Together Card interactions. Without proper care, child services may intervene.

🧒

Toddler

Age range: 2–4 | Duration: Variable (in-game days)

Toddlers gain slightly more independence but still require significant care. They can learn Language and Potty skills. Like babies, toddlers have no height sliders in the Paramaker. They can read picture books and dance to music, and enjoy stacking toys. Cooking activities require adult supervision at this stage.

🎒

Child

Age range: 5–8 | Duration: Variable | Growth spurts: Yes (2)

Children are the first stage where Talents can be unlocked — making this a critical developmental window. They can attend elementary school and must maintain decent grades. Children can read, draw, play hopscotch, build sandcastles, and play with toys and plushies. This stage grants 1 personality point and includes 2 growth spurts.

📚

Preteen

Age range: 9–12 | Duration: 8 in-game days | Growth spurts: Yes (3)

The Preteen stage was confirmed later in development, filling the gap between Child and Teenager. Preteens have 3 growth spurts during this stage, making it a significant transitional period. They attend school and continue developing skills. This stage grants 1 additional personality point, making it important for character development.

🎸

Teenager

Age range: 13–17 | Duration: Variable | Growth spurts: Yes

Teenagers are the final growth stage, with growth spurts bringing them to adult height. They can attend high school and must manage their grades. Teenagers gain access to a wider range of activities and skills. This stage grants 1 personality point. After the final growth spurt, teenagers transition to Young Adult.

💼

Young Adult

Age range: 18–39 | Duration: Variable | No growth spurts

The most versatile life stage — Young Adults can work careers, pursue romantic relationships, start families, and fully engage with all game systems. Full skill access begins here. This is the most popular starting point for new Parafolks because it offers maximum freedom without needing to manage childhood development.

🏠

Adult

Age range: 40–64 | Duration: Variable | No growth spurts

Peak career and social years. Adults have full access to all game systems and are often at their most productive in terms of career advancement and skill mastery. There's no gameplay penalty for being an Adult — it's simply a different phase of life with the same mechanics available as Young Adult.

🌳

Elder

Age range: 65+ | Duration: Variable | No growth spurts

The final life stage. Elders have completed their life journey but can still work, socialize, and pursue hobbies. There is no afterlife in Paralives — the Elder stage simply continues until natural (or accidental) death occurs. Elders can still contribute meaningfully to the household and enjoy their golden years.

Growth Spurts Explained

Three life stages include growth spurts: Child, Preteen, and Teenager. These are hardcoded events that happen at specific percentages of each stage's progress bar, meaning they cannot be skipped if aging is enabled. If aging is turned off entirely, growth spurts will not occur.

During a growth spurt, the Parafolk physically changes — growing taller with age-appropriate proportions. The game automatically applies these changes; they cannot be manually controlled or previewed. This makes the childhood and teenage years genuinely transformative in Paralives.

Important: If you want to experience the full aging journey, start Parafolks as Child (or younger). Starting as Adult or Elder means you'll miss the growth spurts and developmental milestones that make the childhood system meaningful.

How Aging Works

Aging is a toggleable feature in Paralives. Both player-controlled and NPC Parafolks can have aging enabled or disabled independently. This means you can:

Death in Paralives comes in 4 confirmed forms (including old age), and it is not player-triggerable. It's a consequence of circumstances managed by the game's autonomy system. Death is not a chosen interaction — it happens naturally.

Life Stage Tips

  1. Start children as Child, not younger. Managing babies and toddlers is time-intensive and can slow your overall gameplay. Starting as Child lets you experience growth spurts without the full childcare burden.
  2. Don't miss growth spurts. If you're building a family saga, growth spurts are important milestones. Keep aging on during childhood.
  3. Use the Child stage to plan Talents. This is when Talents first unlock. Pay close attention to your Parafolk's developing personality and interests during these years.
  4. Young Adult is the best starting point for beginners. Full game access, no management burden, maximum flexibility.
  5. Consider turning aging off for legacy saves. If you're playing a multi-generation story, freezing certain generations lets you enjoy specific Parafolks longer.
  6. Death is natural. Don't treat death as failure — it's part of the life cycle. Plan ahead by having children before your founding generation ages out.
