How Skills Work
Paralives features 20 skills organized across 6 Knowledge categories: Music, Food, Fitness, Technology, Art, Science, and Early Life. Each skill caps at Level 20, and leveling skills unlocks better performance in related activities, career advantages, and social opportunities.
Skills level up through practice — you need to actually perform the activity. Reading about cooking on a computer doesn't level your Cooking skill; cooking does. This makes skill progression feel organic and tied to actual gameplay rather than menu-selecting.
Knowledge Categories
Skills are grouped into Knowledge categories: Music (Guitar, Piano, Triangle), Food (Cooking), Fitness (Exercise, Dance), Technology (Graphic Design, Programming), Art (Painting), Science (Astronomy, Biology, Surgery), and Early Life (Language, Potty). Each category has related activities and career connections.
Music Knowledge
Guitar
The Guitar skill is one of the most accessible music skills. Practice by purchasing a guitar and playing it at home. High Guitar skill improves Music Career performance and unlocks better musical interactions. It's also a social activity — playing guitar at gatherings entertains nearby Parafolks.
- Purchase guitar from Build Mode catalog
- Click guitar and select "Practice"
- Play at social gatherings for bonus XP
- Performing in public earns more XP than home practice
Piano
Piano is a slower but more nuanced skill to level. Having both Guitar and Piano at high levels unlocks ensemble performance capabilities. Piano practice can be done at home or on public pianos found in some community lots around Melino.
- Purchase piano from Build Mode catalog
- Play piano regularly for consistent XP
- Public pianos in cafes and community spaces
- Combining with Guitar creates practice synergy
Triangle
Yes, the Triangle is a real skill in Paralives. An absurdist charm that players either love or ignore. It levels identically to Guitar and Piano through practice but with a comedic twist — your Parafolk can join a Triangle Orchestra at high levels.
- Purchase triangle from Build Mode catalog
- Click triangle and select "Play"
- Earn XP equivalent to Guitar practice
- Unlock Triangle Orchestra social event at high levels
Food Knowledge
Cooking
Cooking is one of the most important skills in Paralives. Higher Cooking skill produces better-quality meals that satisfy Hunger more effectively and for longer duration. It's also essential for the Culinary Career. Every household benefits from at least one skilled cook.
- Use the stove to cook full meals
- Try new recipes from the computer
- Cooking for multiple people earns bonus XP
- Higher skill unlocks more complex recipes
Fitness Knowledge
Exercise
Exercise is the primary Fitness skill. Can be leveled through gym equipment, jogging, floor exercises, or sports. High Exercise skill improves Energy management and is critical for the Athletic Career. It also helps Parafolks maintain better overall mood through physical activity.
- Gym equipment: treadmill, weights, rowing machine
- Jogging around Melino
- Yoga class Town Event (Tue/Thu/Sun)
- Jogging Club Town Event (weekly)
Dance
Dance is a unique Fitness skill that levels while having fun. Your Parafolk can dance anywhere music is playing — at home with a stereo, at clubs, or during social gatherings. It's social, enjoyable, and levels the Exercise stat simultaneously.
- Dance anywhere with music playing
- Party Town Events are goldmines for Dance XP
- Social gatherings with dancing
- Dance floor objects in Build Mode catalog
Technology Knowledge
Graphic Design
Graphic Design is a creative technology skill. Level it by using the computer for design work. It's valuable for the Tech Career and also supports creative outlets. High Graphic Design skill can unlock design-related career perks and social interactions.
- Computer > Design tab
- Regular practice sessions
- Commissioned work for NPCs (future feature)
- Combining with Painting enhances creativity
Programming
Programming is the more technical side of the Technology Knowledge. Level it through coding practice on the computer. Essential for the Tech Career's programming tracks. Higher Programming skill also enables some unique interactions around the technology theme.
- Computer > Programming tab
- Daily practice sessions
- Work on personal projects
- Unlock freelance programming opportunities
Art Knowledge
Painting
Painting is the primary Art skill and one of the most satisfying to level. Purchase an easel and paint regularly. Completed paintings can be sold for Paradimes, donated to the museum for collection credit, or used to decorate your home. High Painting skill also provides moodlet bonuses for creativity-related activities.
- Purchase easel from Build Mode catalog
- Paint regularly — completed paintings count
- Sell or donate completed paintings
- Combine with Inspired moodlet for bonus XP
Science Knowledge
Astronomy
Astronomy is a niche but fascinating skill. Level it by using a telescope (found on certain lots or as a Build Mode object) or studying on the computer. Astronomy Club Town Events (Mon/Wed/Fri) provide bonus XP. It's one of the slower skills to level but deeply atmospheric.
- Purchase telescope from Build Mode catalog
- Use telescope at night for best results
- Astronomy Club Town Event (Mon/Wed/Fri)
- Computer > Science tab > Astronomy study
Biology
Biology is a core Science skill leveled through computer study. Important for the Science Career and Medical Career paths. High Biology skill also connects thematically with the genetics system when planning families.
- Computer > Science tab > Biology study
- Regular study sessions
- Medical career provides accelerated XP
- Relates to genetics understanding
Surgery
Surgery is the most unique skill in Paralives — it cannot be leveled through normal practice. The only way to level Surgery is through the Medical Career. This makes it the rarest and most specialized skill in the game, reserved for Parafolks pursuing the medical profession.
- Medical Career required
- Advancement through medical ranks
- Cannot be practiced at home or on computer
- Highest Surgery skill = best medical performance
Early Life Skills
Language
Language is a special skill that develops naturally through social interactions during the Baby and Toddler life stages. It cannot be directly leveled — it grows as your young Parafolk interacts with others through Together Cards. Once past the toddler stage, the Language skill is considered fully developed.
- Together Cards with babies and toddlers
- Social interactions in early life stages
- Cannot be rushed or cheats-later modified
- Natural progression through caregiving
Potty
Potty training is a toddler-specific skill. It progresses as parents or caregivers help toddlers use the toilet through social interactions. Once a toddler is fully potty trained, the skill is considered complete and locked at its maximum level for that Parafolk's lifetime.
- Toddler uses toilet with adult supervision
- Together Cards for potty-related interactions
- Automatic progression through age transitions
- Cannot be skipped — toddlers need to grow through this stage
Skill Talents & Bonuses
When creating a Parafolk in the Paramaker, you can assign Talents that provide permanent learning bonuses to specific skills. A Parafolk with the Art Talent levels Painting significantly faster. Choosing the right Talents for your household's needs can save dozens of hours of practice time.
Leveling Strategies
- Build a practice routine: Dedicate specific time slots each day to skill practice. A Parafolk who paints every evening for an hour will reach Level 20 Painting in a few in-game weeks.
- Match skills to careers early: If your Parafolk is pursuing a specific career, start building relevant skills before applying. Check job requirements and practice those skills first.
- Use Town Events: Astronomy Club (Mon/Wed/Fri) for Science, Yoga Class (Tue/Thu/Sun) for Fitness, and Jogging Club for Exercise. Events provide bonus XP while also satisfying other needs.
- Combine skill practice with social time: Playing guitar at a gathering or dancing at a party levels skills while building relationships.
- Paint and sell: Completed paintings can be sold for Paradimes. This turns skill leveling into a money-making activity, especially effective at higher Painting levels.
- Use the computer for knowledge skills: Biology, Astronomy, and Technology skills can all be studied on the computer — no additional objects needed. Make computer study part of your morning routine.
- Assign Talents wisely: If you know a Parafolk will be a chef, assign the Food Talent at creation. The compounding bonus makes a significant difference over time.
